My Tritech: Craig Thorburn, Application Engineering Supervisor
02/11/2016

I knew I wanted to work in engineering from a young age and gained my BEng Honours degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from Robert Gordon’s University in 2002. After graduating, it seemed like a no brainer to look to the oil and gas industry for employment, with the oil price much higher than it is today! I soon started working as a Project Engineer at CTES and gained experience at other oil and gas companies before taking on my role at Tritech in 2007.

As the Application Engineering Supervisor, I head up the application engineering team (funnily enough!) in Aberdeen which includes a huge spectrum of activity – no day is ever the same. My team is primarily responsible for customer support which can range from dealing with customer enquiries, to arranging demonstrations and training in our products so the client can be confident they’re getting the best out of our technology.

I also aid the development of new products and technologies within Tritech which is such an interesting part of my role, it’s amazing to see an idea come to life after months in the making. Our recently launched rack mountable SeaHub unit is a good example of this. After many years of manufacturing PCI based cards for customer PCs we had to make it obsolete, which could have left several key customers without a method of using our equipment. Our existing desktop based SeaHub was not appropriate in some of these instances, so it seemed only natural that we take the leap and make a rack mounted version. It took a lot of work to get there but it was definitely worth it to see a fantastic solution created at the end of it all.

Working in the front line supporting our customers, and the team at Tritech, is definitely the most enjoyable part of my role. For our customers, the help we offer can be invaluable and often mean the difference between disaster and a job well done, so it’s a great feeling when you know your advice has resulted in a successful project.

Tritech has a fantastic work ethic and atmosphere and that’s one the reasons I’ve stayed all these years. We never stop trying to better ourselves and our technology and quite frankly, no other company I’ve worked at before can compare.

My passion for electronics extends outside of the workplace and I can often be found dabbling in electronics at home. I own several Raspberry Pis which are small computers which people use, learn and solve electronic problems while having a bit of fun! I’ve tried to get them into the engineering office but it hasn’t worked quite yet…
